CHICKEN REVOLUTION

The Organization for Animal Rights and the Environment EVA works toward implementing animal rights, the ecological revitalization of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and raising awareness about veganism. To achieve our mission in 2020, we are joining the global cage-free movement called Open Wing Alliance and together we are launching an action that aims to encourage companies from all business sectors to gradually remove eggs sourced from cage farms from their supply chain through a cage-free or free-range commitment. With this action, we want our local companies to join the global cage-free trend as part of socially responsible business.

The Open Wing Alliance is a global coalition that gathers many organizations around the world, fighting to raise the standard of living for laying hens.

Initiated by The Humane League in 2016, OWA currently has over 80 associations worldwide working together to liberate laying hens from cages and improve the living conditions of broiler chickens. More than 70 international companies such as Nestle, Danone, Unilever, McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Tesco, Metro, Spar, Lidl, Aldi, Milka, and Barilla have decided on the socially responsible business of this kind - which includes raising animal protection standards, Mars, Marriott International, Hilton, Best Western, and over 400 national companies from different countries.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are systems for keeping laying hens: battery-cage system, enriched cage system, floor (cage-free) system, and free-range breeding.

Unfortunately, the largest number of cage systems are still represented, which happens to be the most expensive and most inhumane system. In a large number of cases, this type of holding system brings many psychomotor and physical consequences. The most common disorder, that occurs as a result of trauma and inadequate living conditions of laying hens, is the appearance of STEREOTYPE BEHAVIOR.

This happens when there is excessive anxiety present, that the animal feels due to the confined space, lack of physical activity, and with a large amount of stress.

RAGE AGAINST THE CAGE

RAGE AGAINST THE CAGE •

“I live in a cage so small I cannot stretch my wings. I am forced to stand night and day on a sloping wire mesh floor that painfully cuts into my feet. The cage walls tear my feathers, forming blood blisters that never heal.”
