A Fashion Milestone: Vogue Goes Fur-Free!

In a significant victory for animal welfare and ethical fashion, publishing giant Condé Nast — home to iconic titles such as Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, and others — has officially announced a fur-free policy across all its publications. Under the new policy, fur is excluded both from editorial content and advertising. While there are some exemptions — such as used fur and fur from subsistence/Indigenous communities — the message is clear: fur is no longer fashionable.

This bold move comes after years of steady pressure from animal protection organisations. In December 2021, In Defense of Animals initiated an alert urging Vogue to commit to a permanent fur ban and stop glamorising skins taken from animals who suffer and die in fur trade. Indeed, under the leadership transition at Vogue — where Chloe Malle now heads editorial content for the U.S. edition — the once-dominant norm of fur as a symbol of luxury status is finally being challenged. The fashion industry now receives a strong signal: fur is cruel, outdated and unacceptable.

Why this matters?

Vogue is one of the most influential fashion publications in the world. When it stops promoting fur, that signals a shift in what’s desirable, influencing designers, advertisers, stylists, and consumers alike. Reduced demand means fewer animals trapped, caged, electrocuted, or skinned solely for the sake of fashion. We at EVA strongly celebrate this achievement — but we also know this isn’t the end of the road. The entire fashion industry must continue to move beyond all forms of animal harm — including leather, exotic skins, and other animal-body-based fashion materials.

What can you do?

Individual choices and collective pressure shape the future of fashion. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a world where animals are no longer exploited for clothing, accessories, or trends. Here are meaningful ways you can make a difference:

✨ Choose consciously
Support brands that are committed to cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainable materials. Look for labels and certifications that prioritise transparency, environmental responsibility, and compassion. When consumers reward ethical companies, the market shifts.

✨ Use your voice
Share this milestone with friends, colleagues, and on social media. Public awareness is powerful — when people understand the cruelty behind fur and other animal-derived materials, they are more likely to demand alternatives. If global leaders like Vogue can change, then the entire industry is capable of transformation.

✨ Stay informed and proactive
Educate yourself about how fashion impacts animals, workers, and the planet. Support investigations, campaigns, and educational initiatives that reveal the true cost of fashion. Knowledge fuels long-term change.

✨ Encourage brands to do better
Reach out to designers, retailers, influencers, and fashion institutions. Ask them to adopt higher welfare standards, eliminate animal-derived materials, and invest in innovative, humane alternatives. Consumer feedback is often taken seriously — your message can spark change.

✨ Advocate for policy change
Support legislative efforts that aim to restrict or ban cruel practices such as fur farming, trapping, or the use of exotic skins. Public policy can accelerate progress far more effectively when it is backed by engaged citizens.

✨ Lead by example
Embrace a compassionate lifestyle and show others that ethical fashion is stylish, modern, and accessible. By demonstrating the beauty of animal-free choices, you inspire others to follow in your footsteps.
